Embracing Freedom after the Empty Nest
My life changed when my last child moved out. Great things are happening for him, and I’m deeply grateful. This is what we spent twenty‑two years preparing him for—college graduation, his first real job, and now an engagement. While I had hoped his future would unfold in his hometown rather than five hours away, I remain excited for him. Still, this stage arrived with a few tears.
During that first week, I worked through a YouVersion Bible App study called “Embracing the Empty Nest: Redefining Your Purpose.1” The opening day spoke of grief and growth. We grieve the way our kids need us less. Yet just as we easily recognize their spiritual growth, we should also recognize that in this new season, we are growing spiritually as well.
The next day’s study focused on acceptance, followed by reassurance that God is in control. As I spent time thanking God for my children and the adults they have become, I praised Him for the blessings He has brought into their lives. Trust naturally follows praise. When we remember God’s past faithfulness, peace in our present circumstances becomes much easier. I do not fear my son’s path, and I know in my heart he is ready for adulthood.
The final day of the devotional centered on gratefulness. While it was easy to be grateful for the good things in my son’s life, I had not considered how grateful I could be for myself. I now have more free time for my husband and our adventures. Several friends who have walked this road before me said I would “learn to love it.” I know some parents never experience this freedom, especially those with special‑needs children or financial realities that make launching difficult. One friend even admitted she was jealous of me. I needed that reminder.
Rather than linger in sorrow, we are wise to embrace the freedom this new season brings. As the Bible study put it, this transition is “also an opportunity for growth and renewed purpose.” My book has just launched, and I am open to whatever God has in store. I do not presume to know His plans, but I am ready to go where He leads.
